'JABO' RC electric helicoptor outdoor flying report

Why we fly it outdoor ?

It was a long time since I played the RC micro helicopter last time, it was also a long time for me to write something about it. I always wanted to have a try to play the improved edition of JABO RC electric micro helicopter, with the PE main blades and 7.4V 1800mAh Li-Po battery pack on

this helicopter, it¡¯s hardly to play well indoors.
After a few days rainy and windy, the weather became cool and pleasant, the hobbyists of the RC model couldn¡¯t stay at home any more. It was rainy heavily the last night, however they called me and said to me that we could play at tomorrow morning. ¡°We will meet at 7o¡¯clock¡±, they said. They all paid attention to the weather report, so they knew that tomorrow was a sunny day. How I wish it was as they said.
Recharging the batteries, debugging the models, and then sleeping¡
As expected, awaken by the bell at 6 in the morning, I saw the sunshine spilt on the curtain, it was a sunny day! I rushed to the balcony, overlooked the leaves and branches of the trees nearby and faraway to see whether they were swayed in the wind. I was disappointed by what I noticed, the wind was so heavy that I looked like the whole trees were swaying. A thought appeared in my mind, I doubted even the big RC airplane can¡¯t play well in such the wind, how can the little RC helicopter be! However the RC hobbyists like us are so craze that don¡¯t care whatever the cost might be. I carried JABO, Machine bird, UC43, Challenger etc with me and went to meet the other hobbyists at the park.
Trace to the previous time, when I was fond of angling, I never minded whether the place I went had fish or not, just had a pool of water was enough. Till now, I still always associates the ponds with the fish. When I was fond of HI-FI, I always updated my components to satisfy my rigorous demands, it seemed to be an endless approaching. Now, I am fond of RC models, how can I allow such the wind blows my zeal.
It was near 7 o¡¯clock and I was the first one to arrive the park. My friends were delayed by traffic jam caused by the heavy rain there. However it¡¯s sunny here and the wind was not as strong as I think, that¡¯s great! I picked a place where was surrounded by some trees, the wind was weaker and I can stay in the shadow of the trees to avoid sunshine.
JABO is not a kind of the shiny one of the helicopters, the design is not fashion and the shape is not cool. However, after combining the improved soft plastic shelf, plastic main blades and tail blade, with Zhenhua PCM transmitter and 4 in 1 electronical board, the JABO becomes easy to control and hard to be broken.
The PE main blades which are made of PE material or wood can increase the sensitivity and the ability to resist wind of JABO helicopter. While applying ¡®V¡¯ rotor header to JABO or FEDA, the sensitivity can be improved again base on adding the plastic main blades.
Many model hobbyists have tried to play the micro helicopter outdoor, however, since its pose is easily affected by the wind while flying. Therefore, it's require that you have the better skills, the main blades circumrotates faster, the main blades have a good shape to resist the wind and the wind is smaller (better no wind) if you really want to play it outdoors.
To play the helicopter in this beautiful park, you can feel that it is totally different with playing indoors, you don¡¯t need to worry about it would damage the furniture and sofa at all, you don¡¯t need to worry about it would hit on the wall and cut the table legs.
You are still not clear why we prefer to playing outdoors?
I have to tell you all the answers: you can also enjoy yourself and breathe the fresh air and free anion in the beautiful park in the morning, after rain comes fair sunshine!

Are you ready?
Pick out the JABO from the box, here was an original JABO helicopter without any modifications. I removed the original plastic main blades, which was always used before. The advantages of this kind of main blades are: first it¡¯s hard to be broken; secondly, it has good static state stability. However, it¡¯s not suitable for outdoor dynamic fly in high speed. The reason why the plastic main blades have such the property is mainly that the concavo-convex aerofoil of it is good for rising and stability, but the large inertia causes lack of sensitivity, it will not response in time when change the direction too fast, so it¡¯s not easy to do the high speed dynamic fly. For the beginners, please have a look at the articles I wrote on my company¡¯s website, they may help you to know more about the micro helicopter. An early video about FEDA and JABO helis and report for the FEDA heli (English version).
Today, I would like to have a try to use the PE blades and wood blades.
I used the main blades made of light PE material. First, I fixed two slices main blades and the plastic gasket with the angles of 8 degrees on the main rotor head. The gasket must be rotated to the correct direction and pasted onto the rotor head and then used screws and metal gaskets to fix the PE main blades onto the rotor head firmly. The screws should be fixed tightly to get rid of the ¡®nodding¡¯ or shaking while flying. The next step was to install the main blades and rotor head to the JABO helicopter. Since the main blades were connected to the rotor head firmly, it was impossible to spread while it was circumrotating. The PE blades need to be spread by hands. The more informations for the PE blades.
The batteries I used were 7.4V 1800mAh Li-Po battery pack (size: 80mm*33mm*12mm, weight: 70g). Comparing with the Li-battery pack made by Shentai from Taiwan (7.4V 1800mAh, size: 55mm*33mm*20mm, weight: 80g), they have same capacity, the Li-Po made by us are thinner and safer, longer and lighter. With the experiences of using the Shentai Li-battery pack, it¡¯s easy to realise the power of the Li-battery pack I used after comparing their performance. Since the battery pack were not the standard circular one. Fortunately, the battery shelf of JABO is soft, it¡¯s easy to put the Shentai Li-battery pack in it. But the Li-Po I made are too long to put them in, I have to cut off a part of the right angle at the end of the plastic battery shelf, then this kind of batteries can be fixed into the shelf without any difficulties. We can see that the soft plastic battery shelf of JABO micro helicopter has the good plasticity.
I switched on the power, hold up the JABO helicopter, and pushed the speed controller to see how the blades shook and whether ¡®double blades¡¯ happened while the blades were circumrotating in high speed. Then I took off the main blades and rotor head. After horizontal rotating 180 degrees, I put them on and tried again. The minimum shaking and no ¡®double blades¡¯ occurred were what I wanted.
The micro helicopter was fully checked, the RC player was ready and the cameraman was also ready. I tested the wind speed and direction, and faced against the wind. Everything should be done was done, and what was I waiting for? Let¡¯s get start!
Hold on a minute, I would like to say something before I wrote down the experiment of dynamic high speed flying. A RC hobbyist once asked me online why he couldn¡¯t improve anymore after mastering in the basic skills? Here was my answer: you might not even master your basic skills at all, you hadn¡¯t prepared enough for the line flying. In my opinion, the one should master the following basic skills before doing the line flying.
Positive spot hover: this is the standard hover skill, that is to keep the tail of helicopter always facing towards yourself, and holds it in any position you want. If you can catch the helicopter by hands more than three times, this indicates you have mastered this basic hover skill. It¡¯s better to keep the helicopter stay still in the position of 10-30cm in front of your head and hold over 10 seconds and then catch it by hand.
Negative spot hover: to keep the head of the helicopter facing toward yourself. The requirements are the same as skill 1. If you are able to master this skill, you don¡¯t need to practice the left hover and right hover skills, they are included in the negative skill.
Hover and rotation around the origin: No more words to describe how to achieve this action. Use your left hand to change the tail rudder, to make the helicopter rotated in the same speed, at the same height and around the same origin. In the practice, in order to make it rotate in the same height, you need to control the other three factors continuously: the throttle, the aileron and the elevator. You might be confused after few minutes manipulating, but don¡¯t let your helicopter confused too!
The flying height of the helicopter: it¡¯s easy to control while the helicopter flying below 1 meter, while it flies above 1 meter and below your eyes it will be some difficulties to control. It¡¯s the most difficult while it flies above your eyes because it¡¯s totally different in controlling between looking up and looking down. You are very skilful when you can control the helicopter to fly above your head freely.
If you are master all the requirements above, then you are almost near the professional level.
When you sure everything was ready, you can start the high speed, a dynamic line of flight.
Come on, let¡¯s have a try with this JABO.
Is that interesting to fly along the route?
Push the throttle stick, the JABO micro helicopter made the rustled sound, the white blades were running. It looks so beautiful with the green grass as the background.
Push the throttle a little more, the helicopter took off. It headed to the left at about 1 meter height and held for a moment, here was the start point of the flight line and I still need to make small changes to the remote device. To let the helicopter was easy to do the flight and reduced the effects caused by wind, I turned the left-hand trim button upwards a little more, thus the helicopter remained the trend of flying forwards.
The flight course flying I called was actually the circular flying, i.e. to fly around the circle. What I like was to keep the helicopter in a certain height and let it to do the circular movement of the certain diameter (normally 5m¡ยช20m). The standard flying pose was that the head and tail of
the helicopter were always kept on the tangent of this circular closed route.
While doing the clockwise flying, I pushed the elevator up using my left-hand, then, the head of the helicopter would fly forwards and downwards, likes a real fighter plane did in the aerial warfare movie, which were going to carry out attack action. At the same time, I pushed up the throttle stick to speed up the helicopter to avoid it hitting on the ground.
In case the elevator was over pushed and the helicopter dropped, released the elevator and corrected the position of helicopter were necessary and must be done immediately. Anyhow, you should not be afraid of pushing the elevator. While flying forwards, the main blades also cut the wind forwards like the aircraft did, it would provide the raise power while the main blades were circumrotating.
Then I pushed the aileron rightwards using right hand, the airframe would slide towards right, and the helicopter would be forced to right while flying forwards, now the flight route became an arc line , though the tail didn¡¯t follow the trace with the head of the helicopter, it was in the right hand side of the tangent of the line, now I pushed the rudder to right a bit using left hand, the tail would then swing to left until the head and tail were both on the tangent of the line. Concluding the above steps as:
Elevator stick ¨C push forwards, throttle stick ¨C push forwards, aileron stick ¨C push rightwards, rudder stick ¨C push rightwards.
The anticlockwise flying line is similar to the clockwise flying line, I only need to reverse the directions of aileron and rudder. As we used to fly towards a same direction to avoid the planes crashed. It¡¯s more difficult to fly along the negative direction, you still need to practice a lot, however you don¡¯t need to fly along the ¡®8¡¯ figure accurately. The anticlockwise flight can be concluded as followed:
Elevator stick ¨C push forwards, throttle stick ¨C push forwards, aileron stick ¨C push leftwards, rudder stick ¨C push leftwards.
Anyhow, when I played the helicopter, I controlled the sticks freely. By changing the rudder stick, I could make many exciting flying movements. For example, increasing the rudder stick to the right (speed up the rotate speed of tail motor), the flying trace will remain the same, the head of the helicopter pointed to the center of the circle and the tail pointed outwards, the head was also lower than the tail. Some 3D micro helicopters are able to do a high difficulty movement, the tails point to the center of the circle and the heads are outwards, the helicopter flies up side down.
When doing the clockwise flying, I pushed the rudder stick to a certain position on the left, the tail would swing to the right and then came to the position where the head stayed before. Now I pulled the rudder stick a little down and turned the aileron stick to left, the result came to remain the flying line but the head and tail were totally exchanged their position. It¡¯s amazing, the helicopter was flying backwards!
I¡¯m really enjoyed the sound that the micro helicopter made while flying, this sound was caused by the grating when small metal gear of main motor drove the big plastic gear.
Why I am enjoyed that sound?
You will never know if you don¡¯t have a try.
You played the helicopter with your heart. When you were happy, you would find the helicopter very docile and you would play it better and better. The helicopter was alive in your eyes, you would not call it ¡®it¡¯ but ¡®she¡¯ and the boring noise SHE made sounded like a beautiful lark singing to you.
In high speed flying, the sound made by gear grating and blades rotating came from far away to close and far away again, a Doppler Effect was happened, with the shining white blades reflected by the sunshine, the helicopter looked like an angel flying in the sky.
That is why I¡¯m so fond of playing helicopter, (I was an electronic engineer before at the SAW Company of China and Shenck Company of Germany). The number of RC hobbyists becomes more and more in recent years in China, I can find more joys to play with them.
It¡¯s so interesting to play the helicopter in such the line flight, isn¡¯t it?
The delight of straight line flying
The straight line flying is easy to do. It¡¯s a kind of line flying. While the helicopter is making circular or straight line flying, there will be a strong raise force adding onto the main blades while they are rotating. With this force, and the inertia and peg-top effects caused by the rotating of main blades in high speed, the helicopter will become easier to control and more stable.
In order to fly faster, I had to push the elevator stick to drive down the head of the helicopter. The higher speed I wanted, the lower the head should be driven down. The flying pose looked like: the head of the helicopter faced to the ground and the tail pointed towards the sky. This was very similar to the flying pose of real helicopter we saw in the movie. The helicopters are always flying like that!
If I didn¡¯t drive down the head of helicopter while it was in high speed, the helicopter would climb up quickly and slow down though I did not pull the elevator stick downwards. The head of the helicopter would point to the sky and the tail would point to the ground. What happened next was the helicopter would below the stalling speed and the helicopter was falling. However I pushed up the elevator stick and tried to put up the tail of the helicopter, it was useless. I would lose my control absolutely.
This was one of the characteristic of the 4-channels, fixed pitch helicopter. Knowing this, you should take care while playing. While the helicopter was below its stalling speed, if the head of the helicopter pointed to the ground and the tail pointed to the sky, it¡¯s not too difficult to control; if the tail pointed to the ground and the head pointed to the sky, then it¡¯s difficult to save the helicopter.
In case the worst case happened, how to overcome it?
In fact, it¡¯s not so difficult to deal with this problem. Turned the elevator stick to the center and turn the rudder stick either to the left or right, then the position of head and tail would change rapidly by controlling the tail motor. The helicopter then changed to the head pointed to the ground and the tail pointed to the sky. The flying direction also changed. It would fly to another direction when you pushed the throttle stick.
My flying video showed that: the JABO faced to me and came to me rapidly in the distance. It flied lower and lower, faster and faster. When there were only 3 or 4 meters in front of me, because the speed was so fast and it flied against the wind, the helicopter climbed up and the head faced to the sky and slowed down. It flied over my head and the speed was down below to the stalling speed. I turned the rudder stick immediately and the helicopter turned around of 180 degrees. What a good turning! The helicopter flied away from me right along.
When using the wooden main blades, it also has a good wind resistance and easy to control as the PE main blades because of the good shape of wooden blades. However, the wooden blades have large inertia while turning, it¡¯s much more difficult to slow down and landing than using the PE main blades, since you must slow down the helicopter before landing. Even more, we have to catch the helicopter by hands instead of landing on the ground.
It's difficult to landing? Then just landed on my hands. I would like to show my skill ¡®catching in the air¡¯. The helicopter was flying in the sky about 10 meters height, when it flied near the area above my head, I pulled the throttle stick back to the end. The helicopter looked like a wounded bird and fell from the sky. I put out one hand and wanted to catch it. Unfortunately, I failed to do so¡
Luckily, as I said before, JABO has strong body and skid, nothing has been destroyed including the PE main blades. I went on playing.
I played the helicopter round and round until I felt that its movement and response became slow, I knew the batteries power had been nearly run over. The helicopter landed on the ground after 22 minutes flying. I examined the helicopter and touched the batteries, feeling not warm at all. When I used Shentai Li-power batteries with same capacity, they were always felt warm after flying because of the resistances inside the batteries. Now I used my own batteries and they were not warm, I thought this was because the batteries had fewer resistances. This kind of 7.4V Li-power batteries can be used to support the helicopter to do such the flying actions and such a long time, it¡¯s not a kind of joke! However, the main motor was much hotter when I played outdoors than it when I played indoors. It provided much more energy when the helicopter did complex movements.

The dream came true, the days I was on the International Toy Fair Nuremberg Germany 2004
Year 2004, a new year began. I was going to go the Nuremberg in Germany, a place of Chinese RC hobbyists yearning. An international RC model fair was held there.
When I was in college, my English teacher told us that the sign to indicate you had learn English well was to do the small talk in your dream by English. I would do the small talk even in my dream, how hard it is! After that day, I always thought what time I could reach that level.
The fact is, when I keep on working towards to my goal, that day will always come.
Now I was in the Germany such the advance country, from what I saw and felt, I thought the development of internet in Germany was not as popular as it in China. Can you believe that? I can¡¯t. However, this was true! Either in the crowd city center or in the residential area, it¡¯s hardly to find an internet bar or some place that you can get on the internet. In China, you might find a large number of them. Finally, I found one computer which can access the internet service in the business center in the hotel I lived, but I had to wait in a queue to use it.
I was so bored for I can¡¯t get on internet and I thought I was wasting my time here. I didn¡¯t know how those Germen spent their spare time during the night. The TV programs were bored and I can't understand very much, and I would not go to bed at 8pm.
Actually, they had their own entertainment, they also went to the bar but not net bar, they went to the beer bar. I had no choice but to do as the German¡¯s does. My friends and I found a piano bar at the ground floor of the hotel we lived, we went into and ordered the traditional Germany beers. It¡¯s not expensive and it was such the pleasure to spend the night with beers, played the piano and chatting with friends.
Ok, let¡¯s back to the main point.
The 3A and 3D flying techniques have only been developed for a few years in China, in the western world, the time for 3D flying has come for a long time. As be the Chinese, we should not fall behind. Although the national aeromodelling teams have been disbanded, we should not stop setting up our own teams and we should not be dispirited though there are many difficulties in front of us.
What I am doing is to attract more and more people find interests in playing the models and I hope I can bring them the joys and happiness.
As the Chinese famous star Mr. Hou Yao Hua said in our company, ¡®Will you save the money from going the bars or discos and buy a RC airplane, car or boat. You will not regret for it.¡¯
We have many kind of helicopters which are made in China, such as JABO, Thunder Bird, Smartech, E-sky, Flydragon, Btt, etc. They are not expensive and the performances are good enough. We can also improve and update them ourselves. The joys of playing RC models are 90% in modifying and only 10% are in playing. You could make such as 'W' type rotor head or metal swash plate or something else, the joys are inside the processes of making them by your own hands. Someone declared he was able to build his own micro helicopter which will be better than JABO in performance and quality. I suggest that every RC hobbyist works towards this goal to design our own world famous brands and better than those MS700, Zoom400, Logo, Pro Piccolo, ECO8, HB¡
The approach of learning how to play the RC model, from inspiring the curiosity to control it as you wish, is difficult for someone, but for someone it is joyful to learn. It can improve your volition, reactivity, sensitivity and the ability of handcraft. You will be happy for your improvements and you will also be upset for your mistakes. In fact, the steps of the most human development were all start from the curiosity to one thing. After exploring step after step and having thousands and thousands mistakes and failures, we are able to receive such the achievements to let us fly to the sky, fly to the moon, fly to the Mars and fly to the boundless universe. The stories behind the success are always filled with sweats and tears.
Be proud, be self-confident. Let¡¯s start from the spot hover, master the basic skills and play well in the line flying. Everybody please gets ready to welcome our time for 3D flying.
I was ready to have a nice show in the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg of Germany with my hope and dream and of course with JABO.
That day, we took a nice bus and departed from Rotterdam Holland. On the way, we heard the German pop music, watched the beautiful scenery of the countryside. We all fell in love with such the magical landscape. The archaian windmills and modern wind power generators appeared often attracted most of my attentions and I was especially interested in their propellers. The propellers let me associated with the blades on the model airplanes.
After I coming back to China, when I closed my eyes, sometimes as if I saw the huge propeller on the windmills and wind power generators were turning slowly; when I stayed in peace, as if I heard the German songs again. Luckily, I have kept the CD I heard in the bus. It was sent me by that German driver as a gift. It appeared that the music was the bridge across the two countries. Please have a listen to the song 1 and song 2.
We arrived at the fair hall in Nuremberg that night, just caught up with a big celebration for the toy fair. They fired the pyrotechnics and the whole sky was colored by the flash. It can be seen from a long distance, the detonation I heard was a bit slower than the lights I saw. This reminded me about the Spring Festival in China. This was the festival of Nuremberg; this was the festival of the toy and RC hobbyists from all over the world.
The people with different color of skin were all seeing the beautiful sky of Nuremberg, the shining smile appeared on everyone¡¯s face.
I will never forget that night, the night of Feb. 7th, 2004.
I went to the toy fair the next morning. There were 2700 people from more than 60 countries meeting here. Do you want to know what the size of this toy fair was? There were 14 halls and each one was the same size as the Beijing Model Fair hall. The RC hobbyists of course focus their sights onto the model shows, which were held at two halls with the number ¡®7¡¯ and ¡®7A¡¯. Many world famous RC model companies appeared there to show their products. There were Hobbico, Smartech, Ikarus, Mikado, BMI, Kyosho, Robbe, RCX, GWS, MS Composit, Tamiya etc.
The RC models are developed from the static models, the products are various, and the manufacturers at one time keep their traditions products, at the other time develop there own modern and leading products. They can show you most of their products generously. But the most advanced products were reserved and hardly to have a look.
To overview the grow direction of the RC model from this fair, it is developed into two ways. One way is to develop into the large size: the large scale engine helicopters and airplanes, which use turbo engine or rotor engine; the large scale electric powered helicopters, their bodies are made of carbon fibre and alnico, the power are provided by brushless motor and high quality Li-Po batteries. The other way is into the smaller and lighter: electric powered were triangle airplanes, single or double aerofoils and micro helicopter.
  • The micro helicopter still was the focus of the fair of the models, one of the reasons is that it can fly indoors. The experts of flying helicopter hired by each big model company showed up one after another in the exhibition hall, they flied the helicopter everyday. I can recognise one of them, the Germany flying champion of engine power helicopters, Mr. Verbrugge. Everyone watching was amazed by his wonderful skills.
Although surrounded by the serious mannered Germans, I still can¡¯t hold my actuation to have a try of flying the JABO. I can¡¯t be satisfied with just looking their playing.
After I playing in the stagnant Chinese exhibition zone, the whole scene became alive. The dynamic flying, high and low space flying, the spot hover, the spot landing, the clockwise and anticlockwise rotating, the high and low speed circular route flying, the straight line route flying, catching the helicopter in high speed¡
My dream had come true, my perfect flying in the International Toy Fair Germany (Video).
    Goodbye Germany, goodbye Luisa
I left Nuremberg for Ulm after the toy fair was over to see my younger brother¡¯s family. My brother had a 2 years old daughter named Luisa, she was so cute and lovely. My brother¡¯s wife, who is a German, asked me whether I thought her daughter looked like a German or a Chinese. I replied of course she looked like the German, and she was so like a lovely Barbie doll.
In fact, Luisa has the bright and beautiful black eyes.
To my coming, she felt very excited and curious. She pulled me hand and took me outside to play with her.
Ulm is a small town, peaceful and favonian, the white snow covered on the grass beside the street, a church lifted up at the bridge beside; the swans swam on the limpidness Danube River.
My little niece was playing happily with me, when she fell down, she can get up by herself, don¡¯t like some Chinese children you had to pull them up.
The night came, we went home and had dinner together. We sat around the table, Luisa started the Evening Prayer. After it, she sent out her hands and we held hands by hands around the table, thanked the god sending us such the delicious food.
The little Luisa ate like an adult but she can¡¯t even use fork well. She seemed be afraid of the small RC car, when I played it, she hid behind me but laughed excited.
The next morning, as if she didn¡¯t know I was going to leave, she spoke and played as usual. The child would not think too much, I thought. When I packed up my luggage and was about to get on the car, she rushed out from the house, crying.
The car started up. I sat in the car and thought about for a long time, Luisa didn't want me go ? or wanted go with me ?
Goodbye Luisa! Goodbye Ulm! Goodbye Nuremberg! Goodbye Germany!
